Composting is easy – get your bin this month

Did you know, home composting has been shown to reduce the prevalence of pests and rats while stimulating plant growth. The benefits of home composting are plenty and residents are encouraged to get involved. The next compost bin roll-outs will take place over four sessions in November.
The benefits of home composting include a healthy garden for growing plants, grass and vegetables; reducing the amount of waste created in homes and therefore reducing the need for bins or bins space; reducing pests attempting to gain access to garbage bins where there is food waste; and most importantly, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill, a major contributor to global warming.
To get started with the City’s Home Composting Programme, residents are invited to claim their free home composting bin at one of the following sessions:

Every session runs from 08:00 to 12:00.
Only 250 bins are available at each session and only one per household. First come, first served.
• Ocean Square: Ocean Way, Sunset Beach – Saturday, 8 November
• Morningstar Community Hall: De Villiers Avenue, Durbanville – Saturday, 15 November
• Bellville South Community Centre: Kasselsvlei Road (at the back of the centre on the open space) – Saturday 22 November
• Brackenfell Civic Centre: Paradys Street, Brackenfell – Saturday, 29 November
‘We often underestimate the impact that vegetable scraps, such as banana or potato peels and other fruit and vegetable off-cuts, can have on reviving your garden. The compost it creates promotes healthy soil while at the same time minimising the harmful effects these same items can have when sitting in landfills.
‘Make sure to get your compost bin this month to reap the benefits for your garden and the planet,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.
Requirements
• You need to be a homeowner or tenant of a single residence (sectional title flats are excluded);
• Your property needs to include a secure garden or yard area;
• Bring a copy of your municipal account; and
• Bring your identity document or passport
If you do not see your area on the list at present, please be assured the City is still planning future locations for roll-outs.
If you have missed the roll-out session in your area, residents are free to attend any session in any area provided you meet the above requirements and have the required documents.
